Este es un ejemplo típico de una unidad lexical con
existencia propia e independiente y que significa algo diferente de lo que
dicen individualmente sus partes o elementos. Es una expresión estereotipada
que yo vengo oyendo desde mi adolescencia, cuando me hice aficionado a la música
en lengua inglesa.
Mis “rudimentarios” conocimientos de ingles de
entonces me decían que significaba “hacerlo” (verbo make, hacer o fabricar
algo, mas el pronombre neutro it). Posteriormente aprendí que es una expresión idiomática
o modismo o estereotipo sin traducción literal y con diferentes
interpretaciones: lograr (achieve), venir (come), llegar (arrive), tener éxito (succeed),
triunfar (triumph) y sobrevivir (survive).
-My son
tried to be a movie star, but he didn’t make it (achieve).
-Frank is
not present in the reception. He couldn’t make it (come) for some reason.
-He couldn’t
make it (arrive) on time because of the traffic
-I want to
make it as an actor (succeed o triumph).
-Doctor, do
you think that the patient will make it (survive)?
